Paste your text or open a .txt file, choose from 2,253 voices in 149 languages, and download a real MP3 that carries the name you give it.
FreeTTS converts text to MP3 for free: paste up to 5,000 characters or open a .txt file, pick one of 2,253 voices in 149 languages, and download a 24 kHz mono MP3 with the file name you choose. Without an account you get 2,000 characters a day; a free account gives 5,000 a day and 15,000 a month. Free files can carry a 3 second spoken tag (always, from a minute up), while PRO files are clean, take 10,000 characters per file and can download as WAV.

People search for this a dozen ways: text to MP3, txt to MP3, text to speech MP3, TTS to MP3, text to audio file. They all mean the same thing. A voice reads your words, and the result is saved as an MP3 you can keep, play offline, send, or drop into a video editor.
If your text sits in a .txt file, open it with the button under the text box or drag it in; the converter reads it in your browser and fills the box. If it is a PDF, use PDF to audio instead, which reads the PDF for you.
MP3 is the right format for almost everything spoken. It is small, and every phone, car stereo, laptop and editor plays it. WAV only matters if you plan to cut and layer the audio heavily, which is why it sits in PRO.
Type, paste, or open a .txt file. Up to 5,000 characters per file on the free plan, about five minutes of audio.
Choose any of 2,253 voices, set the speed to 0.75x, 1x or 1.25x, and type a file name. The estimate shows the length and size before you convert.
Press Convert to MP3, listen in the player, then download. The file keeps the name you gave it, so chapter-1 lands as chapter-1.mp3.
Measured on our own files on 27 October 2026: English voices read about 16 characters a second at 1x (14 to 19, depending on the voice). Standard and HD voices arrive as 24 kHz mono MP3 at 96 kbps, Signature voices at 32 kbps. A free file over a minute carries the spoken tag in the middle and at the end, which re-encodes it at about 58 kbps and adds 6.6 seconds.
Sizes are estimates from those bitrates; the converter shows the real size after every file. Planning a script by word count? The words to minutes calculator does it before you write a line.
The same 182 characters, rendered on 27 October 2026 and left exactly as FreeTTS returned them. The Signature file is about a quarter of the size of the others, because those voices arrive at 32 kbps.
Chapter one. The lighthouse keeper had not spoken to another person in nineteen days, and when the radio finally crackled into life, he answered it with a voice he barely recognised.
These four are clean files made with a PRO key. On the free plan, Jenny's and Andrew's files would end with the 3 second tag.
What each tool gives you for free, read from its own website on 27 October 2026. Quotes are their words. Limits change, so check before you rely on one.

Andrew Multilingual and Aria sound natural at 1x. A monetised channel needs the PRO licence.
Short, clear, at 1x. Jenny and Guy are steady voices for greetings, closing times and hold messages.
Any of 149 languages. Slow it to 0.75x and loop the file while you repeat after the speaker.
Turn notes into a file you can play on the bus. 0.75x helps when the material is new.
Signature voices have a warm, polished sound, and their files are a quarter of the size.
Type the name before you convert. Numbers at the start (01, 02) keep chapters in order on any player.
Long text reads better split at natural breaks. Five 1,000 character files are easier to fix than one file of 5,000.
A comma is a short breath, a full stop a longer one. If a sentence runs on, the voice will too.
1/2 can be a half or a date. Write what you want to hear: one half, or the first of February.
Try your real text before converting all of it. Names and jargon show problems fast.
MP3 is right for listening and publishing. Pick WAV only if you will cut, layer or master the audio.
Yes. Without an account you can convert 2,000 characters a day; a free account raises that to 5,000 a day and 15,000 a month. Each file holds up to 5,000 characters. PRO ($19 a month) gives 1,000,000 characters a month, 10,000 per file, WAV downloads and files without the tag.
No. Paste, convert and download without an account. A free account only raises your daily allowance.
Press Open .txt file, or drag the file onto the text box. It loads in your browser, its name becomes the MP3 name, and you convert as usual. A file longer than 5,000 characters loads its first 5,000; for a whole book, use the text to audiobook tool.
A free file longer than a minute always carries a 3 second spoken line, “Generated with FreeTTS.org”, in the middle and at the end. A shorter free file can carry it at the end. PRO and Creator files never have it.
The free plan is for personal, non-commercial use. PRO and Creator include a commercial licence, so a monetised channel, ads, paid courses and client work need one of those plans.
24 kHz mono. Standard and HD voices arrive at 96 kbps and Signature voices at 32 kbps; when the tag is added to a free file, it is re-encoded at about 58 kbps. For speech on phones, headphones and laptops, all of these are clean.
Yes, with PRO. Pick WAV before converting, or use Download WAV afterwards. The WAV is 24 kHz, 16 bit, mono, about 2.8 MB per minute.
2,253 voices across 149 languages, from English, Spanish and Hindi to Urdu, Swahili and Welsh. The voice picker filters by language, and you can preview any voice for free before converting.
Only the character allowance: 2,000 a day without an account, or 5,000 a day and 15,000 a month with a free account. Inside that, make as many files as you like.
For a PDF, use the PDF to audio tool, which reads the PDF for you. For a long manuscript, the text to audiobook tool is built for book length text.
Every number on this page comes from files we made on 27 October 2026 through the FreeTTS website and API, measured with ffprobe (length, bitrate, sample rate) and checked with speech to text. The reading speed is the average of five English voices (Jenny, Guy, Andrew, Ava HD and Nova) on two paragraphs. Competitor limits are quoted from each tool's own website on the same day; we did not open paid accounts with them.
