These are different products that get lumped together in the same searches. Speechify Premium ($139/year) is a reader app: point it at a PDF, article, or Kindle book and it reads aloud. FreeTTS is a creator tool: paste text, generate MP3, download, drop into your video editor. Speechify Studio ($288/year) sits between as a creator product but at $60/year more than FreeTTS PRO with a smaller voice library and no free API. We compare all three angles below.
These are not direct substitutes. Pick by what you are trying to do.

*HD multilingual voices: 12 verified in the public API today (Andrew, Ava, Brian, Emma, William, Vivienne, Remy, Seraphina, Florian, Giuseppe, Hyunsu, Thalita). Marketed as "30 HD voices" when counted with their per-voice expressive style variants.
A narration-heavy minute uses ~1,300 characters. Use that to estimate your monthly volume.
Per-year math, creator tier: FreeTTS PRO $19/mo = $228/yr. Speechify Studio = $288/yr. FreeTTS PRO saves you $60/year and bundles the free public API at 200 req/min. For listening-only use, Speechify Premium at $139/yr is cheaper than either creator product but does not give you downloadable MP3s.
If you are coming from Speechify Studio, here is the closest FreeTTS HD multilingual voice for each of their flagship paid voices. PRO HD voices, not free-tier voices.
Both natural, conversational warmth. Stephanie is slightly brighter; Ava holds tone better across long-form narration.
Closest pairing for explainer and corporate content. Brian is neutral and even.
Both work for documentary and YouTube narration. Andrew is slightly lower-pitched and documentary-leaning.
Both upbeat, suitable for marketing scripts and YouTube intros.

Speechify is a better-built reader product. We are not going to pretend otherwise.
Speechify Premium is the polished reader product. iOS and Android apps that feel native. Word-by-word highlighting synced with audio. Adjustable reading speed up to 4x. The whole UX is built around 'point this at content, listen to it, learn from it.' If your goal is to listen to your reading list, nothing FreeTTS does is in the same league.
Speechify ships native iOS app, native Android app, Chrome extension, Safari extension, and a desktop app on macOS and Windows. Your reading queue syncs across all of them. FreeTTS is web-first with a Chrome extension. For multi-device reading, Speechify is structurally ahead.
Drop a PDF (with OCR for scanned docs), forward an email, link a Kindle book, paste a webpage URL: Speechify ingests it and queues it for listening. FreeTTS is paste-text-and-generate. Different jobs, but Speechify wins the ingestion job decisively.
OpenDyslexic font, color overlays, syllable highlighting, line-by-line focus mode, adjustable letter spacing. These are not afterthoughts; they are core product features. For adults and students managing dyslexia or visual processing differences, Speechify is the de facto pick. See our best TTS for dyslexia guide for a deeper dive.
Download articles or books on Speechify mobile and play them on a flight or commute without data. FreeTTS audio is web-generated and you would manually save MP3s to a phone player for offline use. Less elegant.
If you are buying TTS for a parent with macular degeneration, a student with dyslexia, or a commuter who reads a lot, Speechify is the brand they will have heard of. FreeTTS is the under-the-radar choice. For those buying scenarios, Speechify name-drops better.
For creator workflows, these are the structural advantages.
FreeTTS free tier gives you 5,000 characters per month with downloadable MP3 (short audio tag included). Speechify Premium does not let you download arbitrary MP3s and Speechify Studio has no real free tier. For the 'I want to test this and ship something tomorrow' workflow, FreeTTS is the only option.
15 requests per minute on the free tier, 200 requests per minute on PRO, 1,000 requests per minute on Creator. No API key required for free tier. Speechify has API access only on higher Studio tiers, with sales-led onboarding for volume.
FreeTTS supports 75 unique languages with 142 locale variants. Speechify supports 50+ languages, weighted toward the major commercial ones. If you publish in Tamil, Bengali, Vietnamese, Polish, Arabic dialects, or smaller European languages, FreeTTS coverage is meaningfully wider.
FreeTTS PRO Lifetime is $199 one-time, locked forever. Creator Lifetime is $349. Limited to the first 100 buyers. Speechify has occasional AppSumo deals but no consistent lifetime offering. Two years of Speechify Studio is $576; FreeTTS PRO Lifetime saves you $377 minimum and gives you the free API on top.
Every FreeTTS generation produces an MP3 plus a perfectly synced SRT subtitle file. Word-level timing comes directly from the synthesis engine. Speechify Studio does not generate SRT; you build them yourself or run a separate tool.
Need to fix the pronunciation of "methotrexate" or your client's last name? FreeTTS supports IPA phoneme tags out of the box. Speechify Studio uses limited proprietary markup. For technical, medical, or international content, FreeTTS is the better fit.
FreeTTS includes a free PDF-to-audiobook tool that auto-detects chapters and generates per-chapter MP3s. Speechify reads PDFs in-app but does not let you produce a chapter-by-chapter audiobook for distribution. For audiobook producers, this is a real gap.
Voice clone samples are not retained on FreeTTS servers and are not used for model training. The cloned voice itself is stored; the source audio is not. Speechify has its own privacy policy on Studio cloning; the FreeTTS policy is more restrictive on retention.
Different jobs. Speechify reads in flow; FreeTTS downloads MP3s. Be honest about what you need.

| Voice picker in popup (322 voices) | Limited subset | |

Honest framing: Speechify wins as a reading extension, FreeTTS wins as a download-MP3 extension. They are doing different jobs. Most creators want both: Speechify Premium for personal listening, FreeTTS extension for any text they want to ship as audio.
Real timing. Five steps. Note: this is for Studio (creator product), not Premium (reader product).
If you use Premium for listening to articles and PDFs, keep it. FreeTTS does not replace the listening workflow well. This migration is for Speechify Studio (the creator product) only.
Open your Speechify billing page and cancel Studio. Premium can stay if you want both. You keep Studio access until the end of the billing cycle.
Visit freetts.org. The first three generations work without signup. After that, free account requires only an email address (no credit card). The free tier covers 5,000 characters per month; PRO at $19/mo unlocks 1,000,000.
Use the voice mapping table earlier on this page. Generate the same 100-word sample script in both your old Speechify Studio voice and the suggested FreeTTS HD multilingual voice. Pick the one that fits your brand.
Replace Speechify API endpoints with the FreeTTS public API at https://freetts.org/api. Free tier: no key required, 15 req/min. PRO+: key-authenticated, 200-1,000 req/min. Documentation at /developers.

FreeTTS voice count of 322 verified by GET https://freetts.org/api/voices on April 29, 2026. Marketed as "400+" including expressive style variants per voice.
Speechify dyslexia, OCR, and accessibility feature list pulled from their public marketing pages and product documentation.
~1,200-1,500 characters of finished narration per minute in conversational English at default speed. Measured across 30 sample videos.
Zero affiliate links on this page. We own FreeTTS, the bias is up front, and Speechify is recommended on merit where it wins (which is the reader job).
If you want to create downloadable audio, FreeTTS is the simpler tool. First three generations work without signup. PRO at $19/mo if you publish more than ~100k chars per month.
